ARLINGTON, TX – SEPTEMBER 03: Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin of the Alabama Crimson Tide talks with Darreus Rogers #1 of the USC Trojans after the Alabama Crimson Tide beat the USC Trojans 52-6 in the AdvoCare Classic at AT&T Stadium on September 3, 2016 in Arlington, Texas. The Lane Kiffin Era at USC was never short of bumps in the road. Things got so bad the school fired Kiffin following a blowout loss on the road at Arizona State and then left him at the airport. Kiffin’s legacy at USC may not be a very positive one, but the display shown after Alabama’s thrashing of USC in Arlington Saturday night was a nice reminder that a relationship between a coach and his players can run deep even after years apart.

Lane Kiffin was hired by Alabama to be Nick Saban’s offensive coordinator in 2014, a year after being canned by USC. It was a great fit for Kiffin, as he was getting back to a role he has been successful in and was shielded from media pressure. He also got some incredibly talented players to draw plays up for. In his first head-to-head matchup with his former defensive coordinator, Kiffin blew the doors open. After the game, however, Kiffin got a chance to share a few moments with some of his former players at USC, as Trojan players made their way over to their former head coach to share a brief greeting and congratulations.

It’s not quite like when Washington’s Chris Petersen returned to Boise State last season with his Washington Huskies, but it’s similar in nature, and that’s pretty cool.
