Denard Robinson wants people to know thathis reason for crashing his car into a pond in early July had nothing to do with drugs or alcohol. It did, however, have to deal with sleep.

The Jacksonville Jaguars running back drove his black Chevy Impala into a retention pond and blamed the accident on falling asleep behind the wheel. Robinson reiterated his stance on Thursday, telling ESPN staff writer Mike DiRocco he fell asleep at a stoplight at 4 AM, only to wake up in a pond with his passenger. Robinson was issued a citation for the crash.

Robinson said he wasn’t under the influence of anything.

“If that was the case, I would have had a DUI,” Robinson told ESPN.

“I think it’s one of those things that open your eyes and say you’ve got to count your blessings and I understand that.”

Robinson is lucky he, or his passenger, wasn’t seriously injured or killed in the accident. Driving a vehicle while tired is a horrible idea. It’s good to see he wasn’t under the influence of any drugs or alcohol, but it was dumb decision-making on his part to get behind the wheel so late at night. If you’re tired enough to fall asleep when driving, you shouldn’t be on the road, period.

Robinson seems genuinely remorseful about the incident. Next time he gets behind the wheel, let’s hope he has a nap beforehand, not during his drive. Otherwise, he could end up in a worse place than a pond.
