As the NFL offseason rolls along and quarterbacks like Mike Glennon, Brian Hoyer and Nick Foles get paid big money, Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned. This fact of free agency has prompted plenty of discussion on whether Kaepernick’s activism is preventing him from getting a job.

Well according to our president, Kaepernick remains unsigned because of him.

Speaking at a rally in Kentucky, Donald Trump mentioned “the San Francisco quarterback,” then said this:

“There was an article today, that was reported, that NFL owners don’t want to pick him up because they don’t want to get a nasty tweet from Donald Trump. I just saw that. I said if I remember that I’m going to report it to the people of Kentucky. Because they like it when people actually stand for the American flag.”

Via TMZ, here’s the video:

The comment Trump is referring to comes from a Bleacher Report article by Mike Freeman in which one NFL general manager says, “[S]ome teams fear the backlash from fans after getting him. They think there might be protests or [President Donald] Trump will tweet about the team.”

How did that quote reach Trump’s orbit? Likely through The Daily Caller, a conservative web site Trump has been known to read, which ran a post on that quote Monday.

Freeman’s article contains several insights on why Kapernick hasn’t found a new team, and the GM quoted about Trump cited the president as part of a more complicated equation. Shockingly, Trump missed some of the nuance.

Trump can brag all he wants but if Kaep is unsigned it’s strictly for FOOTBALL reasons and NOT because of his political beliefs.

If a team thinks he can help them win, he’ll be somewhere soon.
