What’s the most expensive item you’ve ever paid for in coins only? $5? $10? $20? For Carolina Panthers running back Mike Tolbert, he’s now paid a $3,900 bill only in coins.

You’re probably wondering how he’s done that, and whether he’ll be allowed back to the business at which he paid a bill that big in only coins. Well, he wasn’t too happy with his service at the establishment, and showed his displeasure by dropping an amount of coins that would likely be better suited to filling Scrooge McDuck’s pool than to pay a bill.

He was having the engine replaced in one of his cars, and the job was done by Motion Lab Tuning and supposed to take 10 days. Sounds reasonable, right?

Two and half months later, with the engine still not replaced, Tolbert was obviously and understandably miffed. He claimed that the owner treated him differently “because I’m a millionaire”.

MLT then responded by saying that Tolbert paid his bill entirely in coins, and they understandably weren’t pleased.

Tolbert then confirmed to ESPN that the entire story was true. He also confirmed that he made their life just that little bit more difficult by not using only quarters, half-dollars and dollar coins. No, he went for the jugular.

“Pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, everything,” he said. “I didn’t even care, I didn’t care one bit. I took a truckload of them and put it right there where he wanted, and I got my car towed back to my buddy’s shop.”

He was then asked the incredibly obvious; whether the business was mad with a giant box of coins to pay his bill.

“Oh, they [were] upset. You’ve got to sit there and count … basically four grand in coins, you’d be mad too. But they got what they asked for.”
