For those who say football’s new safety rules have presented a weak prospect, I present to you D.J. Swearinger.

The Arizona Cardinals’ defensive back put a ridiculously hard hit on New York Jets wide receiver Charone Peake during Monday night’s game at University of Phoenix Stadium.

As you can see by the hit, it was hard — and legal. The ESPN crew — Sean McDonough and Jon Gruden — went out of their way to make sure you knew it was legal.

Swearinger continued to make plays for Arizona, as he picked off Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on the same drive:

Fitzpatrick has been a complete mess during the second half of games this season, with no touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. Yikes.
