Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones returns in less than two months, with the seventh season premiere set for July 16th. It’s the penultimate season, and it’s a shorter one, clocking in at just seven episodes; the eighth and final season will air next year and consist of just six episodes.

But perhaps it’s a case of quality over quantity, as at least one actor has called the new scripts the best he’s read.

Via Entertainment Weekly:

Ser Jorah Mormont actor Iain Glen told EW that when he first got the scripts for the new season last year, they inspired him to send a message to showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.

“I wrote to Dan and David and I said I thought they were the best seven episodes they’ve ever written,” Glen said.

Glen has a few ideas as to why that is, and it makes sense, from a narrative standpoint:

“The story is going toward a conclusion,” Glen continues. “There’s no sense of treading water. You have storylines colliding. And the evolving drama and relationships are as good as they have ever been. It definitely feels like the beginning of the end game.”

The entire series has been building to these points, in a way, with stories building toward inevitable conflict and collision. The show has done an admirable job with the setup, and it’s going to earn whatever ending it gets. (It certainly hasn’t been perfect along the way. Enough with the rape scenes, for example.)

Many people might be watching the show just to see how the story ends, at this point, and hopefully their faith and patience will be rewarded. This is a good sign it will be.
