Here’s some pretty sweet news for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Today, Marvel announced Robert Downey Jr., aka Iron Man, has signed on to reprise his role as Tony Stark in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.

It’s great news to see Marvel’s biggest character join the film, Marvel’s first to be co-produced alongside Sony. Downey Jr. reportedly played a big part in casting Tom Holland as Spider-Man in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, in which Spidey is set to make his first rebooted appearance. He’s also shown nothing but enthusiasm for the character in his press appearances. Downey Jr. teased about potentially having a role in the film on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this month, but said he didn’t have a contract yet.

Speculation is that Downey Jr.’s as Stark will be as Spider-Man’s tech guy/mentor, which we’ve gathered from Civil War promos. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him have a small but important part in the film. Downey has admitted in the past he’s more open to taking smaller roles in MCU films if he likes the people behind it.

Our own Kevin McGuire saw Civil War earlier this month and said Marvel nailed the newest Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Downey Jr., Holland, Marisa Tomei and Zendaya and is directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car). It’s due to hit theatres July 7, 2017.
