With the Oilers-Maple Leafs game tied 4-4 late in the third period on Thursday night, Edmonton’s Kris Russell had a very unfortunate moment that basically lost the Oilers the game.
Russell was trying to clear the puck with just over a minute remaining, but instead put the puck into his own net. The Maple Leafs would add an empty netter to make the final score 6-4, but this would serve as the game-winning goal (and was credited to Patrick Marleau):

Yikes.
That summarizes how things are going for the Oilers this year. Despite having Connor McDavid (tied for sixth in the NHL with 30 points), Edmonton’s 10-14-2 (22 points) record is the second-worst in the Western Conference.
