The Chicago Bears have a pivotal offseason ahead of them. On Tuesday, the team went a long way toward resolving one issue that would have otherwise emerged.

Chicago will use its franchise tag on cornerback Jaylon Johnson. A former standout at the University of Utah, Johnson’s play on his rookie deal over the past few seasons has earned a bigger payday. A long-term deal can still be worked out, but the Bears are keeping him in the Windy City for at least another year.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the news of the Bears’ decision.

“Bears are placing their franchise tag on CB Jaylon Johnson, who the team still is working to re-sign to a long-term deal,” Schefter said. He also added that the tag number for Johnson will be a whopping $19.8 million.

Johnson has five career interceptions, four of which came during the 2023 NFL season. He was named a Pro Bowler for the first time last season and also earned a selection to the AP All-Pro Second Team. He’s turned himself into a robust player for the Bears, and they seem to have taken notice.

Johnson is one of the few players the Bears have seen flourish over the past few season. Some bad personnel decisions, coaching choices, and otherwise have put the Bears in a very bad spot. But they have two Top 10 picks this coming NFL Draft. So, a turnaround might be right on schedule.
