The St. Louis Cardinals have added pitching this offseason, but more work needs to be done. So, what about Dylan Cease?
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic penned a column that included intriguing information. The Cardinals have a reported interest in the Chicago White Sox hurler, who is a potential trade candidate this offseason.
MLB Trade Rumors wrote on the Rosenthal post, saying:
Even after revamping their rotation with a rapid-fire trio of free agent signings, the Cardinals are still in the mix for White Sox righty Dylan Cease, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. President of baeball operations John Mozeliak said at the press conference to introduce Sonny Gray that he “doubted” hsi next move owuld be to add more starting pitching but conceded that he remains “open-minded” to further rotation additions.
The Cardinals had grabbed Gray, former Cardinal Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson. The latter is familiar with the area, as Gibson attended the University of Missouri. Those three signings were impactful moves for a St. Louis team in desperate need of pitching help.
But obviously, the Cards would need someone to elevate them. Adam Wainwright retired this offseason, but Wainwright has not played the ‘ace’ role for some time. Jack Flaherty briefly served this position but since faded out and went to Baltimore. The Cardinals haven’t had a bona fide front-of-the-line starter arguably since Wainwright’s prime or Chris Carpenter, so it’s been a minute.
Getting Dylan Cease would surely end that drought. But whether the Cardinals can get him remains unknown.
