Dan Campbell Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

Over the past few days, Dan Campbell has been tossed into the mix as a potential candidate for the open Texas A&M job. The job opened last week after A&M fired head football coach Jimbo Fisher after their investment in him didn’t go as planned. But the Detroit Lions head coach put those rumors to rest on Friday.

Campbell addressed the situation with the media on Friday. The Lions coach adamantly said that he wouldn’t take the job but did stress he wants to help as much as he can anyway from far away.

Colton Pouncy posted, “Lions head coach Dan Campbell asked if Texas A&M approached him for its head coach opening. ‘Um, maybe.’ More from Campbell, who played for A&M: ‘I wanna do everything I can to help them but coach for them.'”

Sometimes, you’ll see coaches dance around the subject of rumors they’ll take another job. It’s a touchy subject, considering the business at hand, but at times, you’ll also see these flat-out denials. They don’t come as often, but this was about as emphatic as it gets.

Campbell has done great work with the Lions. He has them leading the NFC North Division heading into this weekend and it doesn’t seem like they’ll be challenged too much this season. If he coaches the team up to its first playoff win since 1991, they may build a statue and give him a lifetime contract.

Don’t expect Campbell to leave his cushy NFL job anytime soon, even for his alma mater.
