The New York Mets got a taste of bad news on Tuesday. One of the team’s brightest young stars, Ronny Mauricio, suffered a debilitating injury that could keep him out long-term.

On Tuesday, SNY’s Andy Martino reported that Mauricio tore his ACL and will require surgery to repair it.

“Source: Ronny Mauricio has a torn ACL and needs surgery,” Martino posted on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

Mauricio is one of the most exciting prospects in the Mets’ system. He came up to the big leagues for his first go-around during the team’s disappointing 2023 season. Mauricio proved to be one of their bright spots and fans were hoping to enjoy seeing him play on the team in 2024.

But unfortunately, a cruel fate intervened. So now, we will all have to wait.

From MLB.com, this is how he was discussed as a prospect:

“Mauricio has been brimming with potential since signing out of the Dominican Republic for $2.1 million in July 2017. But now entering his age-22 season (and second on New York’s 40-man roster), the rubber is meeting the road. The switch-hitting infielder put up back-to-back seasons with a .296 on-base percentage in 2021 and 2022, the latter coming entirely at Double-A Binghamton. He did set career highs in homers (26), extra-base hits (54), and stolen bases (20) during his 123-game stay int he Eastern League.

Mauricio would have given the Mets a strong base up the middle alongside elite shortstop Francisco Lindor. But obviously, now the team is going to have to pivot in a new direction at second base. It’s a disappointing outcome for all involved, but one that hopefully the youngster can come back from. We’ve seen medical advancements over the years that have made ACL injury recovery a much more encouraging process.
