South Carolina has used the transfer portal before for quarterbacks and appears poised to do it again. The Gamecocks learned that former Auburn quarterback Robby Ashford would go from one SEC program to another. Ashford announced his commitment to South Carolina on Tuesday.
The former Auburn quarterback, who previously played at the University of Oregon, announced his intentions to transfer to South Carolina online. Ashford made the announcement on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.
“Gamecock Nation, whatever it takes, let’s do it,” Ashford posted.

Ashford played two seasons at Auburn before deciding to transfer. In 2022, he threw a career-high 250 pass attempts and finished with a completion percentage of 49.2 percent, 1,613 yards, seven touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Last season he completd 51.9 percent of 27 passes for 145 yards, two touchdowns, and two picks in limited action.
This will mark Ashford’s fifth season playing major college football. His 2022 at Auburn was his fullest season yet, and he played over par. He’ll have some continued work to do. From South Carolina’s perspective, having a quarterback with game experience can only be viewed as a positive.
South Carolina will have its work cut out for them, as usual, in the SEC next season. There’s more teams coming in and rival Georgia is still a juggernaut. We’ll see how they shake out and whether Ashford makes an impact.
