The status of a key Texas Longhorns star has been revealed, and the news isn’t great.

Longhorns running back Jonathon Brooks went down with a right knee injury against TCU on Saturday. Fans and Texas feared the worst, and unfortunately, the worst has come true.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Brooks suffered a “torn right ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.”

“He projected as one of the top running backs — if not the top — in the upcoming draft,” Thamel wrote before saying it’s likely he’d return to Austin after his surgery and rehab processes complete.

It’s a tough blow for both Brooks and Texas. The Longhorns will have to finish the season without a talented playmaker on the team. They still have work to do, as the team will likely be in the Big 12 Championship Game after the regular season. But this news means they must handle that business without Brooks on the field.

Before he went down with injury, Brooks was rated as one of the best running backs in the country. Brooks had rushed for 1,139 yards on 187 carries before his injury. He scored ten rushing touchdowns this season already, too. He was a focal point to the offense, and now that offense will have to find someone else to lean on in the running game.
