It has already been quite the year for Canadian junior hockey league player and referee interactions. We have already seen a referee punch out a player, and now the two parties are back at it again.

Oliver Marcotte of the Junior AA Hockey-Experts out of Sherbrooke, Quebec is the player in question. He was arrested for spitting in the face of the referee and wrestling him to the ground.

The 21 year old apparently took exception to how the referee in question was calling the game, and the two got into a heated verbal exchange late in the third period. Eventually, words were evidently not enough for Marcotte to express his dissatisfaction. Once the referees subdued him, the Quebec provincial police stepped onto the ice to handcuff and subsequently arrest Marcotte.

Marcotte did not stay in jail long. He was released later that night. The police said no complaint was filed against him, and their role in the matter is finished unless one is.

To add insult to arrest, Marcotte’s team lost 9-3 and were eliminated from the league playoffs. Marcotte was also in his final year of junior AA hockey eligibility, meaning his final moments on the ice as a player could have very well come while handcuffed. A fitting end to an otherwise unremarkable career.
