Western Kentucky men’s basketball program is seemingly ready for a new era. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Steve Lutz was hired to replace Rick Stansbury, who stepped down to focus on his health and spending time with his family. Unfortunately for the Hilltoppers, they’ll have to do so without one of their best players moving forward as a star player announced they will transfer.

Western Kentucky guard Dayvion McKnight has elected to enter the NCAA transfer portal. The All-Conference USA selection announced the move via social media on Tuesday

“Hilltopper Nation, it’s been nothing but love since I arrived to campus! I want to thank God, my family and all of my loved ones for helping me to get where I am today,” McKnight wrote in a statement posted to his personal Instagram page. “I would not be the man I am without them. I also want to thank Coach Stanbury and all of the WKU Staff for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love close to home. Lastly, I want to thank my teammates, the support staff, the WKU Athletic department, the fans and the entire Bowling Green community for supporting me since the beginning.

“Due to the recent coaching changes, I’ve decided it is in my best interest to explore my options for the future by entering the transfer portal. Bowling Green will always have a special place in my heart and I’ll forever be a Hilltopper.”

McKnight started all 33 games for the Hilltoppers this season. He averaged a team-high 16.6 points. He also led the team in assists (125) and steals (59). Despite a disappointing season for Western Kentucky, the junior guard was named to the All-Conference USA second team.
