The DePaul Blue Demons are looking for a new head coach, as the school announced Monday it has fired Tony Stubblefield.
Stubblefield joined DePaul for the start of the 2021-22 season and went 28-54 with the school, including a 3-15 record and 0-7 start to Big East play this season.
Stubblefield becomes the latest in a line of coaches to not quite figure out how to pull DePaul out of the doldrums. Since the Big East realigned to its current iteration the Blue Demons have gone 121-207 overall and a staggering 39-149 in conference play.
“After evaluating the current state of our men’s basketball program, a decision was made to make a change in the head coaching position. We want to thank Coach Stubblefield for his hard work and determination over the last two-plus seasons to move our basketball program forward through a new era for DePaul Athletics. Unfortunately, we did not meet our goals.” Athletic Director DeWayne Peevy said in a statement released Monday afternoon.
Assistant coach Matt Brady will coach the Blue Demons for the rest of the season. He is 211-175 in his career as a head coach, having spent time at both Marist and James Madison. He was named the 2007 MAAC Coach of the Year after leading Marist to a 25-9 record and the second round of the NIT.
