Cadillac Williams Auburn Tigers interim head coach Carnell “Cadillac” Williams celebrates after the game as Auburn Tigers take on Texas A&M Aggies at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022. Auburn Tigers defeated Texas A&M Aggies 13-10.

It’s been quite the week for college football coaching news in the state of Alabama.

Auburn Tigers associate head coach and running backs coach Carnell “Cadillac” Williams resigned Thursday evening. While the news may not have the same national shockwaves as Nick Saban’s retirement from the Alabama Crimson Tide Wednesday, it’s still incredibly significant.

Williams, who played at Auburn from 2001-04 had been on the coaching staff since 2019. He released a statement through the university Thursday night, saying, “After taking time to pray and reflect, I have made the decision to resign from my position with Auburn football to pursue other opportunities. I love Auburn, the players and AU family with all my heart, but this decision is what’s best for me, my wife and sons. I am extremely grateful for the coaching opportunity first given to me by Coach Malzahn and most recently by Coach Freeze. These past five years on the Plains have been nothing short of incredible. Auburn is and always will be a special part of my life. War Eagle!”

Drafted fifth overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2005 NFL Draft, Williams went on to spend six of his seven NFL seasons with Tampa before finishing his career with the St. Louis Rams. He was named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2005 after rushing for 1,178 yards and six touchdowns in his first season.
