The Colorado Buffaloes pulled off the biggest upset of the season so far in their first game of the season against TCU. And head coach Deion Sanders believes that a big reason for their win was the terrific play of dual-threat star Travis Hunter, which led to him making a very bold claim about Hunter during an appearance on FS1’s Undisputed.

Hunter, who plays both wide receiver and cornerback for the Buffaloes, had a spectacular game on both sides of the ball. He recorded 11 receptions for 119 yards and snagged a timely interception on defense to help upset TCU.

The hype around Hunter couldn’t be much higher, and it seems like that has even translated over to Sanders’s opinion of him. Sanders spoke about Hunter during an appearance on Undisputed, claiming that Hunter will be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft when he becomes eligible in 2025.

“This kid is a first-rounder on both sides of the ball, like first pick,” Sanders told Skip Bayless and former Dallas Cowboys teammate Michael Irvin on Monday. “He is the first pick. That’s who he is. Travis is—and he loves the game. He does not tire of loving the game and wanting to be in the game and studying the game and all of the intricate details of the game.”

Sanders isn’t entirely wrong about his sentiment. Hunter is obviously a fantastic talent who will get plenty of NFL interest if he continues this level of play for the rest of his college career.

But given the position he plays, going as the No. 1 player in the entire draft is a pretty unrealistic proposition for Hunter. We haven’t seen a wide receiver go No. 1 in the NFL draft since Keyshawn was selected by the New York Jets in 1996. And there has never been a cornerback that has gone No. 1 overall.

Maybe Hunter is the outlier given his excellent talent at multiple positions. But history has shown that he will have an uphill battle to make that happen…
