Deion Sanders’ first year as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes will be one of the most fascinating storylines in all of college football.

Say what you want about Sanders, but the football legend has never shied away from doing things his own way. And he’s done that in Colorado where he’s almost remade the entire roster in one offseason.

How that works out remains to be seen. But Sanders is taking exception to the notion that changing the “culture” had anything to do with it.

“I’m not welcoming to that word, culture,” Sanders told ESPN. “That’s all I heard when I was in Jackson. Culture, culture, culture, culture, culture. Now culture, culture. What the heck does that mean?”

ESPN reporters clarified that it meant creating an environment to “become a good football team. For example, what little things do the players have to do every day to maximize their potential?”

Sanders was even more blunt in his response.

“I don’t think you got to have unity whatsoever,” Sanders said. “You got to have good players.”

As ESPN noted, that “might partially defy conventional wisdom.” But it sums up the blueprint from which Sanders “has built his team over the past nine months.”
