The Michigan Wolverines are rolling so far this season.
Sitting at No. 2 in the AP Poll at a perfect 7-0 this year, Michigan has barely been tested, as their average margin of victory has been almost 33 points per game. The Wolverines are scoring 39.4 points per game, good enough for second in the Big Ten and 10th in the nation.
One of the big reasons for the success on offense has been the strong play of junior quarterback J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy has gone 111-for-142 this season, giving him a 78.2% completion percentage, the second-best in the nation. His 14 touchdown passes puts McCarthy 15th in the nation and second in the Big Ten.
McCarthy’s strong play was one of the focuses of Jim Harbaugh’s media availability on Monday, as Michigan’s head coach had nothing but great things to say about his quarterback.
“I feel like I stand corrected from what I’ve been saying the last several months, which is I think J.J. is a once-in-a-generation quarterback,” Harbaugh said. “J.J. has shown to be on path to be the best quarterback in Michigan history.”
While that may seem a bit lofty considering some of the quarterbacks who have suited up for the Wolverines over the years, Harbaugh continued to explain himself, saying, “He’s had 213 drives. We’ve scored on 130 of those drives, and 96 have been touchdowns, 34 field goals, 61%. So, it’s really remarkable. There’s no stat that demonstrates the quality of quarterback play more than that statistic, in my mind.”
Harbaugh’s explanation certainly makes sense. If nothing else, McCarthy will cement himself as one of the best quarterbacks to ever suit up for Michigan and will be fondly remembered as the signal-caller during one of the most successful runs in program history.
