Wofford Terriers head football coach Josh Conklin announced Thursday that he is resigning from the position effective immediately.
The announcement was shared by Wofford Athletics.

Conklin took over as head coach in 2018 after previously serving as the defensive coordinator at Pitt and FIU. The Terriers were very successful in his first two seasons, going 9-4 and 8-5, respectively, winning back-to-back Southern Conference Championships, and making the FCS playoffs both times.
Unfortunately, the program has fallen off a cliff since then. After a 1-4 finish in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Wofford finished 1-10 last season and is currently 0-5 in 2022. The team is currently on a 15-game losing streak.
“We appreciate the time and work that Josh has put into this program over the past five years, which included a pair of Southern Conference Championships,” said director of athletics Richard Johnson in a statement. “We wish nothing but the best for Josh and his family in the future.”
Shawn Watson, who was the Terriers’ assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Watson was previously the head coach at Southern Illinois between 1994 and 1996.
After such a strong start, the writing was on the wall for Conklin in recent years given how badly the program fell off. And the college football world clearly seemed to be unsurprised with the announcement.
Wofford FB coaching change announcement likely at 530. I’m probably in minority but wish Josh the best going forward. glad we got first two titles with him. Now time to turn the page/make the right hire to right the ship. It’s still a great job but this pick going to be crucial

“took advantage of the opportunity to resign before being fired” was too lengthy a headline, I guess. https://t.co/gD2R3RSvFg
