If the Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Cavaliers had a race to who had the worst offense this season, it would be tied like their Saturday afternoon contest for most of the game.
Through three quarters of this ACC game, the schools combined for a grand total of six points and 13 punts. Through four quarters, they combined for 12 points and 14 punts. Miami eventually won 14-12 in the fourth overtime off a two-point conversion, thanks to changed overtime rules that see alternating two-point conversion attempts beginning in the third overtime. Now you can say both played good defense, or you could say both are just terrible on offense.
The two schools started this game (a first-half tackle of Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong is seen at top) with 10 combined punts. They then traded a pair of field goals, and that was all for most of the afternoon. Neither was able to really move the ball until the fourth quarter.

Both teams came into this contest with identical 3-4 records and both had only won just one game in ACC play. Watching this game, you could see why.
The struggle on offense for both schools this season is well documented, which explains why both teams are struggling to find their way overall this year. There were big things expected out of the Hurricanes this year, but that all ended when they lost to Texas A&M in College Station.
Now both Miami and Virginia find themselves struggling to make a bowl this season. Miami’s eventual 14-12 win helps there, but the Hurricanes still will need to improve to reach that goal. And they may need offensive improvement in particular.
