The demise of the Pac-12 has unfolded like a train wreck over the past eight months, which is coincidentally the number of teams the conference has lost in that span.

The Pac-12 train began derailing in December, when UCLA and USC bolted for the Big Ten. As everyone wondered if the conference could carry on, more cars derailed as Colorado fled last week to the Big 12, followed by Oregon and Washington (Big Ten) earlier Friday.

Now comes the official announcement that everyone has been expecting for days: The Big 12 announced Friday night that the conference has officially added Arizona, Arizona State and Utah.

That Pac-12 train is not only fully derailed, it is on fire, and surrounding towns are being evacuated. And California, Oregon State, Stanford and Washington State, the only teams remaining in what is now the Pac-4, are likely rushing to make their own evacuation plans.

The 108-year-old conference has garnered plenty of speculation and criticism since the defections of USC and UCLA. With the Pac-12’s media rights package due to expire at the end of next season, the loss of those two schools alone made finding a lucrative new deal an uphill battle.

Now, with the conference decimated, the next steps are unclear. College football analysts and fans went crazy with Pac-12 memes and pointed criticism of conference leadership after the latest bad news.
