Since he became the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes ahead of the 2019 college football season, Ryan Day has been fairly successful, making the College Football Playoff three times in his four seasons and posting a 45-6 record as a head coach. However, he’s lost back-to-back games against the rival Michigan Wolverines and has just one playoff victory in four tries with no national titles leading some to wonder if he’s the right man for the job. But his athletic director still supports him.
During an interview with ESPN this week, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith announced his confidence in Ryan Day, who he called his “CEO.” But he did admit that the team needs to do better.
“My standards are high; our team standards are high,” Smith said according to ESPN. “So we talk about how do we get better and how do we make sure we are able to win the championships that we aspire to win? We look at each individual contest that got in the way of that, and we’re trying to figure out what’s the strategy to mitigate that. When we lose, it’s highly disappointing, but I break things down and look at things objectively, and we have good conversations about what we need to do better.”
It’s a bold announcement and the college football world had plenty to say about it one Twitter.
