The Simon Fraser Red Leafs football team was notable as the only NCAA member located in Canada.

Unfortunately, it looks like that is about to end as reports trickled out on Tuesday that the school plans to suspend operations starting immediately.

The news was first reported by Football Scoop.

“Simon Fraser University plans to suspend operations of its football program, sources told FootballScoop on Tuesday,” they said. “Sources tell FootballScoop the program will not compete on the field this season.”

Based in Burnaby, B.C., the Division II school had to play all of their home games in Washington State because of the Canadian government’s COVID-19 traveling restrictions. A member of the Lone Star Conference after the Great Northwest Athletic Conference dissolved, they were required to travel long distances to Texas and New Mexico, which put a strain on resources.

It also hasn’t helped that SFU hasn’t been able to put together much winning.

The school has not won two games in a season since 2014 and is coming off a 1-9 finish in 2022. They also lost 33 straight at one point and have yet to put together a winning season since joining the NCAA in 2010.

It’s an unfortunate turn for one of the NCAA’s most interesting test cases.
