A few weeks ago, Tom Allen was fired from his position of head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers. But he didn’t spend all that long unemployed as he quickly accepted a position as the new defensive coordinator of the Penn State Nittany Lions. And he explained that decision a little bit this weekend.

During a recent press conference, Tom Allen was asked about why he chose to accept the Penn State Nittany Lions coaching job so soon after he lost his job with the Hoosiers.

“Well, you don’t control the clock, the timing of things,” Allen said during his introductory press conference this past week according to On3. “You respond as most things you do in life.”

For Allen, the decision to jump right back into coaching came down to one simple thing: he loves coaching.

“I think, for me? I’m a football coach. Just love what I do. This opportunity that presented itself in this timeframe was one that I immediately had interest in,” Allen said. “Obviously, a chance to go further into that, coach, and go through the process. For me? I really expected to get back into it once things happened as they did. Probably a little quicker than expected but, once again, that’s the part you don’t control.”

We’ll have to see how Allen performs at his new position.
