Three-time national football championship coach Urban Meyer claims to be done with coaching.

But that doesn’t mean he’s done keeping an eye on the sport as part of his work with Fox Sport’s Big Noon Kickoff.

Meyer recently spoke to Tim May of On3 Sports and named a surprising pick as the best roster in college football: The Texas Longhorns, who recently lost star running back Bijan Robinson to the NFL Draft.

“I think Texas,” Meyer said. “You didn’t mention them, but don’t sleep on Texas this year. I was talking to [On3 recruiting analyst] Mark Pantoni, and I was talking to the recruiting director at Ohio State. Man for man, roster against roster, it’s hard to say Texas doesn’t have the best roster in college football.”

Meyer made it clear, however, having the best roster won’t automatically equate to Texas’ first national championship since Vince Young’s days in Austin.

“Now, they’ve got to play. It’s been a while since Texas has been good or elite,” Meyer continued. “But their quarterback, I watched him live against Alabama before he got hurt. They could have won that game. We all know Quinn Ewers from when he was at Ohio State. I think Georgia, Ohio State, and Texas are all in pretty good shape.”

The Longhorns begin their 2023 campaign at home against the Rice Owls on Sept. 3rd.
