When golfers started leaving the PGA Tour for LIV Golf, we heard all sorts of reasons as to why.
While many of them opted to go with the “grow the game” line, we’ve started to see some of the players admit that they decided to leave for the absolutely massive contracts and boatloads of cash and not out of some altruistic sense of changing the sport.
Harold Varner III has been the most honest about this since he joined and now it sounds like Brooks Koepka is finally coming clean about it as well.
Koepka is currently atop the leaderboard at the 2023 Masters and enters Sunday with a commanding four-strike lead over Jon Rahm.
The 32-year-old surprised a lot of people when he spurned the PGA for LIV. There have also been lots of rumors in the months since that he has “buyer’s remorse” and might consider returning to the Tour if not for the insane buyout clauses in LIV’s contracts.
On Friday, Koepka was asked about his decision to join LIV and he admitted that his health and quality of play at the time was major factor in why he decided to do it.
“Brooks Koepka said his LIV decision would’ve been tougher had he been this healthy and his game had felt this good at the time,” wrote Dan Rapaport. “Said he’s happy with the decision but that was a very interesting admission.”

Given that Koepka dealt with major injuries the past two years, you can see why he might take LIV’s guaranteed money, presuming he might not ever have the chance to play as well as he once did.
Now that he’s proven he can still play with the very best, it’ll be interesting to see if that sways his decision to remain with LIV in the future.
