Jon Rahm sat atop the golf world Sunday after his victory in the Masters Tournament.

Few who watched Rahm play his first hole at Augusta National Thursday would have predicted that outcome. The Spaniard four-putted that first hole for a double bogey.

Looking back at that terrible start during post-tournament interviews, Rahm said he didn’t deserve the blame. Instead, he pointed the finger at an unexpected culprit — Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz.

Before that first hole, Ertz texted Rahm, his friend, with what he probably thought would be an encouraging message.

“For those people who believe in jinxing … Thursday morning, 10 minutes before my tee time, I saw a text from a good friend of mine … Zach Ertz,” Rahm said. “He said in the text, and I’m going to paraphrase here, ‘That first green looking like a walk in the park.’ Ten minutes before I four-putted to start the tournament.

“Thank you Zach, don’t ever do that again.”

After Rahm’s comments, Ertz quickly responded on Twitter to set the record straight.

I apologize for absolutely nothing!” Ertz tweeted. “You can expect these texts every major going forward my friend! Congratulations!”

If that’s the case, don’t be surprised if Rahm turns off his phone before his next major.
