Jon Rahm

As the old saying goes, sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

PGA star Jon Rahm proved that Friday during the second round of The Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in California. Hitting his approach shot on No. 17, Rahm badly mishit the ball and it sailed far right.

The ball careened into the grandstand area. Yet before the broadcast booth could finish uttering phrases like “That will be a tough up and down,” the ball struck the grandstand base, skipped through the tall rough and rolled onto the green 3 feet from the hole.

A relieved Rahm knocked home the short putt for an eagle that vaulted him to a tie atop the leaderboard with Max Homa.

Back on the fairway, Rahm’s reaction said it all. The 28-year-old star planted his face in his hand.

It was definitely as crazy a shot as you would ever find on one of those bizarre mini-golf holes you’ve played with your family.

Rahm doesn’t usually need to resort to such luck for success on the course. He currently sits atop the FedEx Cup standings, and has won nine PGA Tour events, including the 2021 U.S. Open, in addition to nine events on the European Tour.
