The presence of LIV Golf players had made for an extremely awkward Masters Tournament. It also doesn’t help that the ever-polarizing Phil Mickelson reportedly didn’t say a word during the annual Masters’ Champions Dinner on Tuesday.
While that type of behavior is not entirely surprising for Mickelson, the 52-year-old has let a lot of his play do the talking during this week’s tournament at Augusta. The three-time Masters champion finished the second round 4-under after making a birdie on the 18th hole. He shot 69 and finished Friday inside the top 10.
After skipping the Masters last year and struggling to find his form as one of the world’s best golfers with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, Mickelson’s play this week has surprised many. Though, Mickelson feels like he’s closer than he has been to taking the golf world by storm in quite some time.
“I’m close to going on a tear,” Mickelson said via ESPN. “Even though the scores haven’t shown it, like I’m hitting so many good shots, pretty soon I’m going to have a really low one. When that happens and it clicks, then the game feels easy again. Then I stop putting pressure on myself, and the scores just start to fall into place.”
We’ll have to see how Phil Mickelson fares throughout the remainder of the tournament, but he’s right in the thick of it as the weekend nears at Augusta.
