Matt Fitzpatrick USA Today

Matt Fitzpatrick has a thing for stats.

No, seriously. He even admitted he could show you 7,000 of his shots in his deep archive — he keeps track of it all.

It’s no surprise the most recent RBC Heritage champion has the same militant attitude toward the other aspects of his golf game. When you take a look at the golf balls he uses, you’ll understand.

“Yes, this takes me some serious time,” Fitzpatrick said in a Titleist Instagram post.

Using a mixture of green, red, black, blue and brown permanent markers, Fitzpatrick makes specific marks (slashes and colored dots) along his golf balls. He also adds his initials. (h/t Golf.com)

The green line is used as a line tracer for alignment, and the four colored dots, he uses to fill four dimples on the ball.

Whatever it is, it’s working.

The 28-year-old wanted to add some distance to his game and did so with the help of his analytics obsession.

His younger brother, Alex, who is set to compete against him in this week’s Zurich Classic at TPC Louisiana near New Orleans, noticed it from the beginning.

“Everyone knows Matt is a statistical person, but we’re not the athlete that some of the guys are,” Alex said on an episode of the Netflix series ‘Full Swing.’ “He works harder than them most likely and finds ways to get better, just finding the 0.1 percent of everything that will make him better and beat them.”

Fitzpatrick has been collecting data on his game since he was 15, and it’s definitely paying off.
