A Vermont high school girls basketball team decided to forfeit a game in an out-of-state tournament after refusing to play against another team that had a transgender player on its roster.
Mid Vermont Christian School (MVCS) was scheduled to take on Long Trail School on February 21 but they forfeited the game after learning that there was a transgender player on Long Trail’s roster, MVCS head of school Vicky Fogg told CNN.
“We withdrew from the tournament because we believe playing against an opponent with a biological male jeopardizes the fairness of the game and the safety of our players,” Fogg said in a statement.

“Allowing biological males to participate in women’s sports sets a bad precedent for the future of women’s sports in general.”
The Vermont Principals’ Association (VPA) policy on gender identity, which governs school sports in the state, says that students are allowed to participate in athletic activities “in a manner consistent with their gender identity.” The VPA told CNN afterward that it “reiterates its support for each student” following the decision.
As for Long Trail, they advanced to round two of the tournament following the forfeit and played on Friday against a team that apparently didn’t share MVCS’s opinion.
