For just the fifth time in MLB history, both the American League and National League had unanimous winners for Rookie of the Year.

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll was unanimously named the National League’s winner Monday evening. He joins Baltimore Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson, who took home the American League’s hardware.

New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga finished second behind Carroll.

Carroll made his debut with the Diamondbacks during the final weeks of the 2022 season but maintained his rookie eligibility heading into the 2023 season. He made waves during spring training when he signed an eight-year, $118 million extension with Arizona.

The extension paid off almost right away, with Carroll leading the team with a .285 batting average and 54 stolen bases to go along with 25 home runs, which tied him for second on the team. Carroll also became the first rookie to start the All-Star Game since New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge did it in 2017.

Carroll also became the first rookie in MLB history to hit 20 or more home runs and steal 50 or more bases in their rookie season.

The Diamondbacks were the only active MLB franchise to never have a Rookie of the Year winner before Carroll won. Starting pitcher Wade Miley had the previous highest finish for an Arizona player when he came in second place behind Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper in the 2012 voting.

Social media had plenty to say about Carroll’s award.
