For the fifth time in franchise history, a San Diego Padres pitcher has won the Cy Young Award.

Padres lefthander Blake Snell was named 2023 Cy Young Wednesday night, receiving 28 of 30 possible first-place votes.

Snell joins Randy Jones, Gaylord Perry, Mark Davis, and Jake Peavy as the other Padres to win the award.

This is Snell’s second career Cy Young, as he won the 2018 American League Cy Young with the Tampa Bay Rays. Snell is just the sixth pitcher to ever win the award in both the National League and American League, joining Roger Clemens, Max Scherzer, Gaylord Perry, Roy Halladay, Randy Johnson, and Pedro Martinez, all of whom either made the Hall of Fame or, in the case of Scherzer, will make the Hall of Fame as soon as he’s eligible.

San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb and Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen each received a first-place vote, as well.

On the season, Snell went 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA and 234 strikeouts in 180.0 innings pitched. Snell pitched the fewest amount of innings for any non-reliever full-season Cy Young in history, breaking the previous record of 180.2 set by… Blake Snell in 2018.

Snell is currently a free agent and could be an absolute game-changer for whatever team signs the 31-year-old two-time Cy Young winner.

The announcement led to plenty of reactions on social media.
