Garrett Mitchell

The Milwaukee Brewers have suffered several injuries to key players already this season, and they took another hit Friday.

Manager Craig Counsell told reporters that outfielder Garrett Mitchell’s MRI revealed “significant damage” to his shoulder and will require surgery. While he’ll get a second opinion, surgery and rehab could cost him the rest of the season.

Mitchell suffered the injury sliding into a base in Tuesday’s win against the Seattle Mariners. The club placed him on the 10-day IL Wednesday with a left shoulder subluxation, which is a partial dislocation.

No one was more surprised by the the MRI results and diagnosis than Mitchell himself.

“I’m really just trying to process the situation,” Mitchell said. “Definitely not easy to hear the news, for sure. … I don’t feel that bad, but from what I heard it’s obviously not good. … I’m just trying to stay positive.”

Mitchell, 24, has been the starter in center field. One of the Brewers’ top prospects when he debuted last season, he’s slashing .259/.306/.466 with three home runs in 58 at-bats.

This injury, coming on the heels of ailments to star pitchers Brandon Woodruff and Corbin Burnes, must have Counsell talking to himself. Still, the Brewers entered the day in first place in the NL Central with a 14-5 record.
