St. Louis Cardinals blow save against the San Francisco Giants.

The St. Louis Cardinals have not had the season most were expecting thus far this season, coming into Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants with a 27-41 record. It looked like the Cardinals were going to get back on track in Wednesday’s game after dropping the first two games of the series. That wasn’t to be after a brutal ninth-inning collapse led to their fifth consecutive loss.

St. Louis entered the top of the ninth inning with a 5-3 lead, turning the ball over reliever Giovanny Gallegos to try and pick up the save.

The Giants found themselves down to he final strike of the game, but outfielder Mike Yastrzemski came through with a clutch two-run home run to right field.

Given how this season has gone for the Cardinals, this pretty much sucked the life out of the home crowd at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals went down in order in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the game to extra innings.

The momentum in this game had completely escaped the Cardinals, which led to the Giants bringing in three runs in the top of the tenth inning.

The Cardinals then failed to score in the bottom of the tenth inning, resulting in a series sweep for the Giants and a fifth consecutive loss for St. Louis.

Many around the MLB world blasted them for their latest collapse on Wednesday afternoon.

There have been plenty of issues for the Cardinals this season which have led to their horrid performance. Their bullpen has been arguably the biggest concern, as this latest blown save marked the 15th of the season, which is tied for the most in baseball.

The worst part about this poor start is that there is a ton of talent on this team, including star third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado spoke about the collapse after the game, calling their performance this season “bad baseball”.

“I don’t know if you’d call it a stretch anymore. It’s just bad baseball. We have been playing bad baseball for awhile now.”

If they don’t turn things around quickly, we could see a player like Arenado or Paul Goldschmidt on the move before the MLB trade deadline in August.
