Drew Smyly and Yan Gomes

The Chicago Cubs could do no wrong Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

Well, almost no wrong.

On offense, the Cubs hammered out hit after hit, filling the scoreboard with crooked numbers.

The offensive onslaught was so great that veteran lefthander Drew Smyly sailed into the sixth inning with a perfect game almost unnoticed.

Smyly retired the Dodgers in order in the sixth and seventh innings, but trouble struck in the eighth. Leadoff hitter David Peralta topped a slow roller down the third-base line. Smyly pounced off the mound to grab the ball, but catcher Yan Gomes, also racing to grab the ball, collided with Smyly.

It’s not clear Smyly or Gomes had a shot to make the play in time, but it was still a crazy way to have a perfect game spoiled.

Still, Smyly, who recorded two more outs before being lifted, and the Cubs had plenty to celebrate after the big win. And it’s not like this 13-0 blowout came against a bottom feeder, either, but the powerful Dodgers.

Cody Bellinger and Trey Mancini got the home run parade started in the third with consecutive blasts.

Designated hitter Patrick Wisdom decided to get in on the fun, cracking his ninth homer in the fifth inning.

Many baseball fans gave Gomes a good-natured ribbing for the collision, but saluted the Cubs and Smyly on an almost perfect afternoon.
