It’s been a very disappointing season for the Boston Red Sox, who entered play on Wednesday in last place in the AL East, 17 games back of the first-place New York Yankees. Boston (69-73) is the only AL East team with a losing record.

Well, the Red Sox hosted the Yankees on Wednesday night at Fenway Park, and one play really summarized the season for Boston.

Gleyber Torres — who was the hero in Tuesday night’s Yankees victory and put the dagger in a pitcher’s Red Sox career — hit a single to right field with two on and two outs in the top of the fifth inning. Boston right fielder Alex Verdugo tried to throw out Aaron Hicks at the plate, but Hicks beat the throw. Red Sox catcher Connor Wong then tried to throw out Torres — who had rounded first base with the throw coming home — and instead threw the ball down the right field line.

What looked like a very ordinary single for Torres turned into a little league three-run homer (it will show up as an RBI single in the box score):

Yikes, Red Sox.

The Yankees went on to win the game 5-3.

Here’s a look at how the baseball world is reacting to yet another comical and disappointing moment in the Boston season:
