The mess around the New York Mets keeps building. But in the face of an abysmal June, they don’t appear in any rush to let manager Buck Showalter go.
Met fans, writers, and otherwise, have grilled Showalter for his management this season. After an expensive winter, New York is in fourth place in the National League East Division. Following Monday night’s loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Mets are 16 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves—the Braves, who finished with an identical record to the Mets last year, of course. But now, that seems like ancient history.
Still, it doesn’t seem like the team wants to pile on Buck. Owner Steve Cohen said he wouldn’t overreact to anything (though Cohen also announced he would host a press conference on Wednesday). Then, the team’s general manager stepped in and defended the longtime manager.
Through Mike Mayer on Twitter, Billy Eppler said, “I think he’s the guy to get us back on track.”

This answer won’t help cure the woes in Flushing right now. Many Met fans have become restless after the team’s lackluster performance this season. Instinctively, the call for a manager to be let go isn’t surprising. Showalter’s critics have raised sound arguments as to why he and the team have done a poor job.
But from the sounds of it, even with Cohen’s upcoming presser, it doesn’t appear the Mets will part ways with Showalter anytime soon.
