Pat Corrales, who spent almost 50 years in MLB as a player, manager and coach, has died at age 82.

The Atlanta Braves, who employed Corrales as their bench coach from 1990 through 2006, confirmed his death. No cause of death was announced.

“The Atlanta Braves mourn the death of longtime bench coach Pat Corrales. Our thoughts are with his friends and family during this difficult time.”

A native of Los Angeles, Corrales broke into the majors as a catcher with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1964. Although never more than a role player — he had 166 career hits —Corrales had a 10-year playing career that also included stops in Cincinnati, San Diego and St. Louis.

After his playing days ended, Corrales spent 10 seasons as a manager with the Texas Rangers, Phillies and Cleveland. He posted a 572-634 mark (.474).

Corrales spent the remainder of his baseball career as a coach, most notably as the longtime bench coach of the Braves. He also spent time as a coach with the Rangers and New York Yankees before finishing a four-year run with the Washington Nationals in 2011.

Chicago Cubs legend Fergie Jenkins tweeted Monday, “We had quite a few battles on the field, Pat was a great guy, a great teammate, and a friend.”

Los Angeles Dodgers president and part-owner Stan Kasten told Dodger Blue“I was fortunate to have worked with Pat for more than 30 years at three franchises and he was instrumental in turning all three into championship organizations.”

The baseball world shared its memories of Corrales and sympathies for his family following the news.
