The New York Yankees have gone on quite the slide since the All-Star break.
Frustrations were at an all-time high Saturday night following a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, which included a viral moment from skipper Aaron Boone. It also included an interesting reaction from general manager Brian Cashman, who told reporters Monday that he’s been “angry with the team for six months.”
Despite the longtime general manager seeming jaded by his team’s performance the past few games, Cashman was asked directly by reporters on Monday night if this year’s squad can win a World Series. Without hesitation, Cashman says a chance to do something “special,” according to the New York Post:
“I do. I do. I think this team has a chance to do special things, including winning a World Series title that is certainly in our grasp. We’ve still got to earn our way to October.”
While the Yanks’ losing streak may be a bit of an overreaction by the media, considering New York has an eight-game lead in the American League East. In the sport of baseball, things can change in an instant, and if their poor play translates into a lackluster Subway Series with crosstown rivals the New York Mets this week, the Yankees could end up playing in one of the AL Wild-Card Game.
Cashman also referred to the Yankees’ season so far as “spectacular.”
“This year’s team has been pretty spectacular,” he told The Post by phone, “the more recent experience notwithstanding. It’s an extremely talented group that obviously cares a great deal for each other and for the win column.
