Tiger Woods and Rory McIIroy’s new golf league received huge news Monday. The Fenway Sports Group, owned and operated by John Henry and Tom Werner, joined the TGL.
“We are excited about this new journey,” Henry and Werner said in an announcement Monday via CNBC. “Through this new, tech-focused version of the game, New England sports fans will soon have a team of world-class PGA Tour players to cheer for and redefine for this community what it means to play the game in the modern era.”
Of course, the group will own the Boston franchise. This adds to their collection, which includes the Liverpool Football Club and the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. The FSG team is the second squad to be announced by TGL. On June 8, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and legendary tennis players Serena and Venus Williams became owners of a Los Angeles team.
“The team at FSG is uniquely positioned to help build an expanding community for fans of golf, and embracing that audience is foundational to the Boston’s TGL team’s mission,” said Mike McCarley, co-founder of TMRW Sports, which controls TGL.
What is happening in his own league may explain why Tiger has barely commented on the merger between the PGA/LIV Tours.
He and McIIroy’s new venture may be a considerable player in the golf world once the league starts next January.
They already have significant investors in and out of the sports world, which could spell trouble for the new merger.
