Los Angeles Angels fans’ sum of all fears was realized late Wednesday night when SoCal News Group reporter Jeff Flecther reported that Shohei Ohtani had suffered a torn UCL and will not pitch again this season.

Given that he’s set to be a free agent at the end of the season, Angels fans may have seen Ohtani pitch for them for the final time.

Ohtani hadn’t pitched for the Angels in two weeks when he skipped his previous start citing arm fatigue. He returned to the mound on Wednesday for a game against the Cincinnati Reds, but unfortunately.

However, in the top of just the second inning, he was pulled from the game for an undisclosed injury.

“Shohei Ohtani just left the game with some kind of health issue in the 2nd inning. There wasn’t much discussion on the mound,” Fletcher said on Twitter at the time.

Now, it sounds like we know the extent of the injury, though Fletcher did note that there is “no decision on surgery yet.”

Ohtani was 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 23 starts on the season.

The Angels didn’t trade Ohtani before the deadline because they hoped they could make a playoff run with him. Since then, their season has fallen apart and now their superstar two-way player won’t be able to pitch again this year.

There’s also the news that Mike Trout is going back on the IL, per MLB.com reporter Rhett Bollinger.

It’s a disaster all the way around for the Angels, and the reactions around the news reflected that.
