As the Los Angeles Dodgers prepare to play in yet another postseason, they will be doing such without one of their top starting pitchers.

Pitcher Tony Gonsolin will undergo Tommy John Surgery in Los Angeles on Friday, the team announced Monday.

Prior to the injury, Gonsolin went 8-5 in 20 starts for the Dodgers, with a 4.98 ERA. He also recorded 82 strikeouts. His problems came to a head earlier in August against the Miami Marlins when the right-hander allowed 10 runs in just three innings pitched and surrendered five home runs. He was placed on the injured list the following day with right forearm inflammation, which was the precursor to Monday’s announcement.

Last season saw Gonsolin amass an impressive 16-1 record and 2.14 ERA, earning his lone All-Star team selection.

Gonsolin will miss the remainder of the 2023 season and will miss most, if not all, of the 2024 season.

Dodgers pitchers have had no shortage of injury woes this year, as Dustin May and Walker Buehler are already out for the season with elbow injuries of their own, and Clayton Kershaw missed nearly six weeks with a shoulder injury. Despite the bad luck, Los Angeles has the second-best record in the National League and has a 12-game lead in the NL West over the second-place Arizona Diamondbacks.
