The New York Yankees’ disappointing 2023 season is over, and owner Hal Steinbrenner wasted no time meeting with the club’s executives to chart a course forward.

The Yankees managing general partner appeared at a Sportico conference Wednesday, where he told reporters he met last week with 15 team executives at the club’s facility in Tampa. He sent a tough message to everyone in the meeting: “Check your egos at the door.”

“I want you to challenge everything, all of our philosophies, all of our practices, but more importantly, in a respectful way, I want you to challenge each other,” Steinbrenner said he told the executives (via the AP). “I want you to critique each other. Check your egos at the door.”

Two key changes that will not be made in the offseason involve Yankees GM Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone, who are both returning.

Beyond that, Steinbrenner said everything is on the table.

“We’re going to be making some changes,” Steinbrenner said (via the AP). “Some may be more subtle than others, but I think we’ve uncovered certainly things we can do better.

“At times it got a little dicey. But it was respectful the entire time. And there wasn’t one stone we left unturned, from health of the team, what we’re doing in the clubhouse, clubhouse culture, what we do in the weight room, analytics, pro scouting, biomechanics. Is there enough communication between everybody?”

Things definitely went wrong in 2023, as the Yankees finished 82-80 despite carrying the second-highest MLB payroll.
