Somehow in the year 2017, the discussion in the NBA and now Twitter is all about how the earth is flat.

The conversation started when Kyrie Irving was on Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye’s podcast where they discussed conspiracy theories. And in that discussion, Irving noted about how the world was flat. He doubled down on it and also received support from LeBron James and Draymond Green.

Naturally the next step was to ask NBA commissioner Adam Silver his thoughts on the subject. He would be a bit more level headed, wouldn’t he?

Silver started off jokingly but then transitioned into a serious topic. The guy is a professional after all.

“Kyrie and I went to the same college; he may have taken some different courses than I did. In all seriousness, though, as he made clear today, he was trying to be provocative, and I think it was effective. I think it was a larger comment on the so-called ‘fake news’ debate on what’s going on in our society right now, and what’s reported, and it led to an interesting discussion.

But, personally, I believe the world is round.”

It’s an interesting theory, one that may or may not be the truth. I’m pretty sure Silver prefers answering questions about the earth being flat than about James Dolan and Charles Oakley.

Irving himself stated during his press availability that he thought it was interesting that his comments made on the podcast being national news was odd.

“I mean, the fact that that could be news all over the world just shows you how … I mean, the fact that it’s a social phenomenon that Kyrie thinks the world is flat is hilarious to me,” said Irving to the press.

This is starting to become more like an episode of X-Files than anything else. It’s tough to pin down who believes what and how serious they are being. The conspiracies surrounding this only make it that much better.

Like many others, they are going to be relieved when the focus goes back to an orange, round ball instead. Basketball is going to be better for it.
