Michael Jordan

Many consider Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan to be the greatest individual player in the history of the NBA, and now he’ll have his name forever attached to one of the league’s most iconic awards.

On Tuesday, the Chicago Bulls announced that the winner of the NBA’s annual MVP Award will now be given a special new bit of hardware paying homage to the all-time great: The Michael Jordan Trophy.

“The Michael Jordan Trophy. The NBA’s MVP will now be awarded with The Michael Jordan Trophy, bearing the name of the greatest player of all time. MJ was a 5x MVP in his career,” the Chicago Bulls shared on Twitter.

It’s a huge honor to Michael Jordan, and the award will surely be a huge honor to whoever earns it in the future. As a result, the NBA world had plenty to say about the announcement on Twitter. Some loved the move, but not everyone was too fond of it.

“YOU LOVE TO SEE IT!!” the Bleacher Nation Bulls said on Twitter.

“Daily reminder that Lebron should have like 6 or 7 but they didn’t want him overtaking this guy for marketing purposes,” Ebe Time said on Twitter.

“All for naming the award after Jordan; he’s the greatest. But the new trophy doesn’t work. The old MVP trophy is iconic, perfect in design. Those iconic pieces don’t need to be changed. And if you do retire it, replace it with something equally as powerful. This ain’t it,” RealGM Columnist Jarrod Rudolph said.

“Can’t wait to see the arguments about this one,” retired radio personality Marcus said.

“Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the record for most Michael Jordan Trophies winning six Michael Jordan Trophies during his illustrious career,” the Over & Back podcast said.

Like it or hate it, it’s certainly a big move.
