Steph Curry's mouthguard

A game-worn mouthguard from Stephen Curry is going up for auction in August, and for some reason, people are willing to pay for it.

The mouthguard, which has the Warriors’ logo as well as Curry’s name and number on it, was acquired by SCP Auctions in California after a fan picked it up off the floor during a game this season. Dan Imler, the vice president of the auction house, said he expects the mouthguard to fetch about $5,000 during the August 3 auction.

“Steph Curry has given more life to mouthguards than any player in history,” Imler said. “The way he flips it in and out of his mouth has become part of watching him during a game.”

The mouthguard will go on sale in California, along with a number of other items from prominent athletes. The list of items includes a jacket John Wooden wore while coaching UCLA and Larry Bird’s warmup jerseys from his time at Indiana State.

Curry’s mouthguard has gained some notoriety during his rise in the NBA. He told Jimmy Kimmel that chewing on the mouthguard helps calm hm during games, especially while shooting free throws.

When Curry’s mouthguard gets sold in August, it likely won’t be the most expensive item from a professional athlete’s mouth. Muhammad Ali’s mouthguard from his last fight went for $6,700 in 2013 and Ty Cobb’s dentures went for $7,475 in 1989.
